According to a Reuters report posted by MSNBC, the Vatican has ruled to excommunicate female priests and those who would ordain them. Now I’m not saying that female priests or pastors are not necessarily saved, nor would I necessarily say that of those who ordain them. But I would say that the concept of women leading men in the church is not biblical, nor is it consistent with God’s design for manhood and womanhood. The Vatican rightly points out that Christ commissioned men to lead and establish the church. Though there are serious disagreements over the role of the Lord’s table (part of the basis of the priesthood and excommunication), I believe that this is an important statement on gender roles, and we evangelicals would be wise to see how this story unfolds.
