I have been asked to preach for a revival during spring break this year. Lord willing, I will be preaching through the book of Jonah. I thank God for this study, because it has solidified for me his sovereign rule over all the earth and his desire to see peoples from all nations and ethnicities turn to him. God’s sovereignty in salvation and his desire for all to repent are not at odds!

As these ideas have been in my mind, I was quite surprised to find connections between Jonah and Acts 10. As Dr. Paul Hoskins preached from Acts 10-11 this morning, I noticed these parallels:

  • Both involve trips to Joppa (Jon. 1:3; Acts 10:5)
  • Both involve the sovereign Lord (cf. Jon. 1:1, 4, 9, 14, 17, 2:9-10; Acts 11:17-18)
  • Both involve a divine commission (Jon. 1:1-2, 3:1-2; Acts 10:19-20)
  • Both involve mercy to Gentiles (cf. Jon. 1:12-16, 3:1-10, 4:11; Acts 10:44-48, 11:18)
